Junior Non-Fiction Children’s Book Author, Editor, Creator

Location: Sydney - Northern Beaches
Type: Part-time / Freelance / Flexible

Do you have a passion to work on creative content for children, are you a wordsmith, and have a love of facts and a knack for writing engaging content for young readers? We’re looking for a creative and detail-oriented Junior Non-Fiction Children’s Book Author and Editor to join our team!

This unique role is perfect for someone who’s enthusiastic about educating and entertaining kids aged 6–12 through fact-based content that sparks curiosity and wonder. Whether it’s writing about the world’s deadliest animals, weird inventions or space exploration, you’ll help bring exciting topics to life in an age-appropriate, visually engaging format.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and write fun, informative and well-structured non-fiction content for children’s books.
  • Edit and refine drafts for clarity, tone, grammar and educational value.
  • Collaborate with designers, illustrators and senior editors to ensure cohesive storytelling.
  • Contribute ideas for new titles, book series and content formats.
  • Ensure factual accuracy and alignment with curriculum standards or age-group learning goals.
  • Help shape Q&A sections, fun facts, glossaries and other engaging elements.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A strong interest in children’s education, literacy or publishing.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, especially for a younger audience.
  • A flair for turning complex topics into simple, engaging narratives.
  • Experience or education in writing, journalism, education, publishing or a related field.
  • A positive attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to take constructive feedback.
  • Works well in a collaborative team workplace.
  • Familiarity with Australian or UK English.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with children’s books or educational materials.
  • An eye for visual storytelling and page layout.
  • Knowledge of current trends in children's non-fiction.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
